continuous civilization, Chinese history dates back to
more than 5,000 years and was traditionally said to begin
with Huang Di, also known as ‘The Yellow Emperor’.
Although
there where hundreds of ethnic groups and many dynasties
existed in China throughout its history, The Tang
and the Han are often referred to as the most prosperous
periods of Chinese history, with Han dynasty some 2,200
years ago, marked the rise of military power that created
an empire. The Song dynasty was the first government in
world history to issue paper money and the first Chinese
dynasty to establish a permanent standing navy. The Ming
Dynasty, founded by Zhu Yuanzhang after eliminating his
rivals and banishing the Mongols from China, lasted for
276 years (from 1368 to 1644), with his capital city first
in Nanjing and later in Beijing.
The first half of the 20th century
saw the fall of the last Chinese emperor, Japanese
invasion, World War II, and civil war between Chinese
Communist and Nationalist forces—ending with the retreat
of the Nationalists to Taiwan. Since the late 1970s,
